Today the UK Supreme Court ruled that Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament was unlawful. As a result, Parliament will meet tomorrow to hold the government to account.
We in Londependence fully support the UK’s opposition parties, including the SNP, in trying to prevent a no-deal Brexit. Leaving without a deal would be even more of a disaster than leaving with one. It would seriously injure London’s economy, affecting jobs and wages, and ending our right to free movement across Europe.
The Tories’ illegal attempt to prorogue Parliament was an obvious bid to placate hard Brexiteers who might otherwise vote for Nigel Farage. Any such move would trample on the wishes of people in London and Scotland, making our need to break free of England a lot more urgent.
London voted strongly against Brexit in 2016, and would undoubtedly vote even more strongly against it today. That being the case, London should not be dragged out of the EU against its democratically expressed will. Whatever the UK eventually decides, London should aim to remain in the EU regardless.
